Trimester 1
Week 9
Your baby is about the size of a grape.
Length: 2.3 cm · Weight: 2 g
Common this week: Nausea, Round ligament twinges, Fatigue, Constipation, Heartburn, Mood swings.
Baby development
- The embryo's tail (coccyx) has disappeared.
- Eyes have moved to the front of the face and eyelids have fused shut.
- Tiny earlobes are forming and the inner ear is developing.
- Muscles are developing and the baby makes small reflexive movements.
Changes for you
- The placenta is now fully functioning and taking over hormone production.
- Nausea may begin to ease slightly as placental hormones stabilise — for some.
- Round ligament pain (sharp tugging sensation near the groin) can start.
- Weight gain so far is minimal — about 0.5–1 kg is normal.
Tips
- If round ligament pain is bothersome, move slowly when changing positions.
- Avoid lying flat on your back for long periods — tilt to one side with a pillow.
- Continue taking your prenatal vitamins every day.
- Gentle walking or swimming is beneficial — ask your midwife about safe exercise.
Appointments
- Discuss NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) with your doctor if interested — usually done 10–13 weeks. Note: not Medicare-covered.
Warning signs
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe cramping
- Shoulder tip pain (can indicate internal bleeding)
Australian notes
- NIPT screens for chromosomal conditions (Down syndrome, etc.) with a blood test. It is available privately in Australia from around $400–$600. Ask your doctor or visit the RANZCOG website for information.
