Baby development
- The baby can make facial expressions — squinting, frowning, and grimacing.
- The roof of the mouth (palate) is complete.
- The baby is growing peach-fuzz hair called lanugo to keep warm.
- The thyroid gland is producing hormones and the liver is secreting bile.
Changes for you
- Welcome to the second trimester — often called the "golden trimester".
- Nausea typically subsides and energy returns.
- The bump becomes more visible as the uterus expands above the pubic bone.
- Some women experience nasal congestion (pregnancy rhinitis) from increased blood flow.
Tips
- Begin gentle stretching and prenatal exercise — swimming and walking are ideal.
- Sleep on your side rather than your back — left side is optimal for circulation.
- Consider a pregnancy pillow to support your growing belly.
- If you haven't seen a dentist recently, now is a good time.
Appointments
- Routine antenatal check with GP or midwife — blood pressure, urine, fundal height.
