Week 12
Your baby is about the size of a kiwi fruit.
Length: 5.4 cm · Weight: 14 g
Common this week: Nausea (easing), Fatigue, Bloating, Mild back pain.
Baby development
- The baby's reflexes are developing — fingers will curl if touched.
- Kidneys are now producing urine, which is excreted into the amniotic fluid.
- The intestines have moved from the umbilical cord back into the abdomen.
- Vocal cords are forming and the pituitary gland is producing hormones.
Changes for you
- The uterus has grown out of the pelvic bowl — you may notice a small lower abdominal roundness.
- Risk of miscarriage drops significantly from this week.
- Many women begin telling family and friends at this milestone.
- Energy levels often begin to improve heading toward the second trimester.
Tips
- If you haven't had your NT scan yet — this is your last chance soon.
- Discuss your birth plan preferences with your midwife or OB — public or private, hospital or birth centre.
- Consider telling your employer so they can accommodate any early pregnancy adjustments.
- Continue avoiding listeria-risk foods — a complete list is at foodstandards.gov.au.

- NT scan if not done yet (final window 13w6d).
- Review first trimester screening results with your doctor.

- At 12 weeks, your antenatal care will often transition more formally to a hospital or midwifery service in NSW.
- If choosing public care at an NSW hospital, this is a good time to register with the antenatal clinic.
