Baby development
- The brain is growing rapidly — about 100 new brain cells form per minute.
- Arm and leg buds are growing longer, with paddle-shaped hands appearing.
- The face is developing: nostrils, lens pits (future eyes), and tongue.
- The umbilical cord is now connecting the embryo to the placenta.
Changes for you
- Nausea and vomiting may be at their worst this week.
- You may need to urinate frequently as the uterus grows and presses on the bladder.
- Mood swings, emotional sensitivity, and tearfulness are common.
- Some women notice a metallic taste in their mouth.
Tips
- Keep crackers by the bedside to eat before getting up — can reduce morning nausea.
- Increase fibre and fluid intake to help with constipation.
- Rest when you can; fatigue in the first trimester is very normal.
- Talk to your GP or midwife if nausea is affecting your daily life.
Appointments
- First antenatal appointment with GP or midwife, if not already done.
Warning signs
- Signs of dehydration (dark urine, dizziness)
- Inability to eat or drink anything for 24+ hours
Australian notes
- In NSW, your midwife or GP will give you the Blue Book at your first antenatal appointment.
- Dental health matters during pregnancy — gum disease can affect pregnancy outcomes. See a dentist; many bulk-bill pregnant women.
