Week 38: The waiting game

Your baby’s lungs are fully mature and ready to breathe air, and they’re still gaining around 30 grams a day — about the size of a small watermelon now. Their first poo, meconium, is all set in their intestines, ready for those early nappies.

These can be strange, stretchy days of waiting, with every twinge prompting the question: is this it? Your cervix is quietly thinning and may be starting to open, and some people get a last burst of nesting energy just before labour begins.

Stay close to home, keep your phone charged, and let your support person know to be on standby. Bloom’s contraction timer is there for when things start — and eat light, easily digestible meals so you’re fuelled but comfortable.

The waiting can be its own challenge, mentally more than physically. Well-meaning “any sign yet?” messages, a due date that’s still a way off, and the sheer not-knowing can all wear on you. Distract yourself gently, do nice small things while you still easily can, and try to rest — labour asks a lot of you, so banked sleep is precious. Keep tuning in to your baby’s movements as you have all along; they shouldn’t tail off at the end.

It can help to have a few gentle distractions lined up for these last days — a good series, easy outings close to home, small jobs that feel satisfying — and to lean on your support people for reassurance when the waiting gets to you. Trust that your baby will come when they’re ready; first babies in particular often take their time past the “due” window.

One thing to take seriously: if your waters break and the fluid looks green or brown, or if you notice your baby’s movements slowing, don’t wait — call your hospital or 000 straight away. These are the moments to act quickly, and your care team will want to hear from you immediately.
